An old pic but gives an idea. I use those rubber feet designed to go under washing machines beneath the speakers to isolate them from the shelf, works like a charm. I reckon Troels Bookshelves would work well. The Ekta 2Ds would work (with tuning) if you want to go fully active. My feeling is that the bookshelves would sound better and have fuller sound - the dedicated midrange will be worth it too! {Note: the EKTA 2Ds have a very different bass driver (and no midrange) to my Ekta mkIIs. Similar name, very different beasts.}

Don't want active as I've already got loads of amplifiers lying about, plus if the amp in the speaker goes bad you've got nothing until it's fixed.
Appreciate the advantages of active but this is the TV system so accurate reproduction is not a priority, it's my 'playing about' system where I try stuff that I always fancied but could not afford back in the day.
The B&O in the pic are pretty good but a bit tame (very similar sound to Harbeths) so I want a speaker that is a bit more fun. As well as NS1000M I'm also considering the JBL L100 Classic.
Will check out the Troels bookshelf design, thanks.

Will check out the Troels bookshelf design, thanks. Most speakers will not perform at their best in those positions, hence the bookshelves suggestion. Troels gives details to further tune the bass in situ (via. resistors in front of bass crossover). From my experience Troels speakers are not really 'fun' or 'not fun'. Generally pretty neutral - they'll mainly play what they're given. The bookshelves are reasonably sensitive (90dB) and designed to play at decent SPLs. I have a friend who may be interested in some, so if I make some you could probably borrow to try. EDIT: macca if you're gonna go fun and try the ns1000ms or JBL L100 Classics, then the nearest Troels would be these: www.troelsgravesen.dk/Faital-3WC.htm (could be made with front ports) About £1000 plus cabinet materials and time. Very good value for a 3 way with 12" bass, 6" mid and 1" tweeter. As with all three (Faital 3WC-12", JBL and Ns1000m) you'll get a lot of bass in that situation. They're all pretty large speakers. Faitals are 37.5 x 40 x 68 cm, WxDxH. A bit smaller, but probably still fun: www.troelsgravesen.dk/Faital-3WC-10.htm

The smaller one seems to be the most likely option. About a foot wide so would fit in the space.
Would not want those pin stripes though, they look really naff.

I did wonder when you said NS1000m (375mm wide) and JBLs L100s (390mm wide). They're pretty chunky. I am not a pinstripe fan either. The cabinets can be built to suit any look you prefer. A local company has started doing a speaker spraying service - which is handy! Lots of Faital cabinet ideas here FAITAL BUILDS

Really I would only need a finish on the tops and the front baffle since the rest of the speaker won't be visible. Gloss white ideally.
