Lowther Acoustas - nooooooo… not for me but flogged them for loads. I see the Lowthers left a similar impression on you, as they did me Martin. I thought they were bloody peculiar and unpleasant, although for some reason I owned two pairs.

Lowther Acoustas - nooooooo… not for me but flogged them for loads. I see the Lowthers left a similar impression on you, as they did me Martin. I thought they were bloody peculiar and unpleasant, although for some reason I owned two pairs. I could see their strengths, but the weaknesses were just too much. Sold the drivers to Classique Sounds and turned the cabs into PA speakers and sold them. The only speakers I ever made money on. Bought them for twenty quid, bloke was moving house and had put off packing up to the last minute and was desperate to sell. He had a single Lowther corner horn as well but I couldn't fit it all in one taxi. I got an amp of him for nothing as well, a valve monoblock, I had it for twenty years just sat about, then I gave it to Alan Firebottle who turned it into a SECA power amp. He had a whole room full of turntables, mostly Lenco GL75. Said I could have them for nothing, must have been 30 or 40 decks in total, but they were worthless back then (about 1993).

Nonoffin - Is that list in chronological order? Almost Martin, the ups and downs in size were due mainly to house moves. Seemed like a good idea (origin = wife) but soon got rid of the tiddlers and went back to floorstanders. Nothing will drag me away from the Quadrals I now have.

There are some weird jumps in there, that's why I asked. Although there are a fair few I have not heard, like the Wilsons. What were they like?

There are some weird jumps in there, that's why I asked. Although there are a fair few I have not heard, like the Wilsons. What were they like? If ever there was a power hungry speaker the Arcs are it. Having said that, crank the volume up and they held together really well and never blared or shouted at you. Bass was truly tight with not an ounce of fat on it and you could stare at the bass cones at full chat and they appeared never to move. I would describe the treble as "truthful" which translates as Sh#t in and Sh#t out, especially on less than perfect recordings. It was that reason why I let them go, as after an hour or two of listening your ears felt like Mike Tyson had given you a whack or two, while at low levels the magic wasn't there any more so long late night sesh's became a rarity.

That's interesting, these JM Labs I have at the moment are like that. You have to crank them for best results, but they are pretty neutral to the recording.
I don't listen late night though so that's not an issue for me. I'd like to but it's a terrace house, neighbours on both sides.
I should say looking back at my speaker history there are some weird jumps there too.

Great question, Favourite has to be the Spica’s. Worst is easy: Heybrook HB1. Think chalk and blackboard! Mine were the first batch with gold logos, right after the green and white ones. Best value would be JPW P1s. £125 new was insane. I’ll add one more: Best sonically.. has to be Glastonbury’s. They were like alien technology when you got them right: I’ve been heard nothing like them before or since. Thanks for your answer. Never seen or heard a Glastonbury. Will look out for one. Have a pair of JPW P1 myself. I agree they’re good. One of the pairs i’ve held on to. In the attic, but I won’t sell them. If you ever get to hear Glastonbury’s, they need some TLC to flourish. Amp Choice in particular can make them shine or sulk. The best amp I tried was the cheapest: an MF A1 was incredible. You’d think it was ten grands worth through them. They also need space. About 2 feet behind and to the sides and at leat 8 feet apart. 10 is better. Their final drawback is also their biggest asset. The drivers have no end stops. That means overdriving can blow them. The thing is they don’t sound “loud” no matter how much you increase volume, they just get bigger and give you more fantastic music. You are therefore left to self-censor your listening pleasure with little indication of how close to blowing them you really are. I was probany safe but I did listen at high volumes and was sometimes left wanting more because they were so glorious. They really did sound like a different technology and it’s never left me.

Over around 30 years...
Wharfedale Laser 90B - nice, generous and open (unlike some of the flat earth gear that followed!) Mission 70MK2 - still have these (currently in my daughter's bedroom on the end of a SMSLQ5) BLQ1 Linn Kan - couldn't live with 'em, couldn't live without 'em Heybrook HB1 Epos ES14 - looking back, these were terrific vfm Linn Kan Rega Ela Impulse H6 Linn Kan Usher S-520 Harbeth P3 Harbeth P3ESR NVA Cube 1 - the best of the lot Klipsch Heresy 3 - due to arrive this week, to form the first part of a vintage-inspired system
There were other 'dalliances', of course, I've only listed anything that lasted a respectable amount of time.

I'm sure you'd like Shahinian and Duevals savvypaul. Conventional point and squirt I have difficulty with now unless expensive. My brothers Estelons and YG are two brands I can get on with. Should add would like to hear a pair of Westie's Spica's.

Good fun, fast and forward, just enough bass, not bad timing for a ported speaker. Obvious treble lift. My dealer reckons they are ProAcs for a quarter of the price. IIRC one of the crossover component values can be changed to fix that lift, if desired. They would be a stone-cold bargain at around £150 s/h...

FFS - 40 Linn Kans! One listen in a dealer told me they were crap and bullshit! I agree with you on that one, didn't like them in anyway at all. That reminds me, one dealer I heard them at said that I needed to have my hearing checked when I said they were dreadful, LOL. I promptly walked out, funny that!

Linn dealers seem to be notorious for doing that.

Docfoster, How did you get on with the Dynaudio Audience 62? S. They were a good step up from what I’d had previously, so I got on well with them for a few years. Thinking back, they were the last smaller sounding speakers I had. Usefully, I sold them to a friend so I get to hear them from time to time. They’re crisp and open, but lack the scale and bass content that I want these days.

22 pairs of Tannoy dual concentrics actually! Plus loads of vintage speakers from other makers. Far too many to list, or possibly even remember. The most modern speakers I've owned were Dynaudio Contour 1.3 Mk.II (bought new around 2003) and Usher S520. I've also built around fifty pairs myself. For many years, I'd always have a speaker build on the go. I started out making some pretty horrible examples, but you learn and I have actually built some really fine sounding ones. Not done this for a good few years, but I'm planning on starting again, seeing as I have dozens of nice drive units and loads of crossover components knocking about, plus a saw table and workshop. My cabinet finishes are top notch, I've had people asking me what make mine were and not believing it when I say I made them .
