I reckon a Quad 909 plus a passive pre-amp would work very nicely through the R952's. Probably a bit overkill though powerwise. I've heard the R852 driven with a 306/Tisbury combo and it sounded really good. Are you fussed about the later 909's being made in China? S. Not really. Some people seem to think there's a sort of stigma attached because of this, I think that's nonsense myself. I've not seen any evidence of the Chinese built item being inferior, merely a few unsupported comments on the web suggesting this. They should be ignored in my view.

They always go on about how inferior the caps are in the Chinese 909. Resulting in a more bright sound etc. Some have proved the latter by measuring and so forth.

Yes, olive cases. Without looking, they should be twice the price of a 250, although you would get your money back when sold. Will have a look on ebay now.

Might just be me but then135s I’ve heard I haven’t liked. Lifeless would be the most apt description. That’s two pairs, one of which I heard before and after a Naim service, I thought they were just a mono 250. I’m sure DSJR said they were different, but I have no idea. Sounded nothing like a 250 to me. Dave hated the 250 and liked the 135s, so maybe they are different. I dunno. As ever, sample variation, partnering kit and auditory memory all mean that my thoughts have little relevance, even to me. I still hope to hear a different sound from them. I doubt Naim could make a lifeless amp consistently.it makes no sense.

The music flows more freely, and doesn't have a hard edge which I thought the 250's had when demo'ed against 135's. I also heard 250's active into SBL's and still thought the 135's were better. 135's are selling for high money! Even un-serviced examples seem a bit overpriced. That's why I suggested the 909. Twice the power for much less than half the money and maybe better built into the bargain.

We may both have thought the one speaker I heard were naff and the one speaker you heard were good. The 135s before and after service shocked both me and their owner. He got them used and tthougt they sounded very “off”. I went round and thought they’d need a service too. We both knew the Naim authorised Service Engineer and he was known to be one of the very best. He give them a full servuce and they came back sounding just the same. My mate gave them over 100 hours run in and still no change, so he sold them. I do remember JV saying that component makers had changed during development and this, more than anything, changed the way Naim amps sounded. Maybe these and the earlier 135s I heard we’re from a batch that didn’t do it for me. I have loved all other JV era amps, so it seems odd that their flagship amps would be duff. Even though it’s my own first-hand experience and verified by a mate, I still don’t have much faith in it as a reliable indicator of other 135s I might hear in future.

I see 250s going on ebay for over a grand. Crackers when you can get a Krell for that or less.

Seems to be more prevalent on late eighties and early 90s Monitor Audio than many others, I wonder if there’s a reason or am I just imagining it?

to be honest im not sure,although i would have thought these days you can get finishes with uv protection? its only the surface that is affective,if you sand it down you will get back to normal colour. back in the day when i was an antique restorer i used to bleach the Sh#t out of new veneer when laid,then build the colour i was looking for back up again with various chemical stains,natural dye etc. i even went to the extremes of hiring a portable sun bed for a week to stick a card table i had made under it to experiment!
