I have never heard a pair. They seem to be an acquired taste, Anyone here heard or dabbled with them?

Yes, built and used them for years. Had various iterations, all run actively with a miniDSP 4x10HD. Most box speakers sound coloured to me in the bass now by comparison.
Recently heard a passive design made by Colin Topps with a crossover design by Scott Lingren which I think are very good indeed, Colin is trying some different drivers and configurations, once I’ve settled on what I like best I’ll be having him build me a pair. They use a very nice 10” coaxial driver from Monacor for mids and top, with a Fostex supertweeter as the icing on the cake.

Thanks, Ali. Great to have someone here with first hand experience, I’m always surprised more people don’t try them. One day I hope to dabble myself.

WAF is a major factor I think lol, they are quite space hungry, a decent size baffle is needed for a good bass response, unless you use dsp.
They sound better to me than any box speaker I’ve heard to date though, at least any I could afford.

I fancied using white acrylic as a baffle, my wife is usually fine with any speakers. If I got away with Spica Angelus, I guess I’m on safe ground I like the idea of bigger drivers for one thing, Also the lack,of box sounds would be great. Might be up to a year before I get a chance but I miss my DiY.

Acrylic would be an excellent material to use, I’ve heard a pair made to the Quasar design, using some very expensive drivers which sounded sublime on the end of a diy 45 valve amp. Remains one of the best sounds I’ve ever heard.

Open baffles are too ugly to even contemplate.

I did think of trying an OB design for my diy build, but got worried about a possible lack of bass. Though I accept that those worries may have been misplaced. Any thoughts...? From a manufacture POV they’d be very attractive for a future project: Easier to build than a cabinet and very much easier to adjust driver levels at the tuning stage.

With any reasonably sized baffle, you won’t much below around 35hz, however I’m happy to make that trade off as I find the bass much less coloured than that of a box speaker. There are ways round this though if this is a issue for you. A separate sub, or build the woofers into a U or H shaped cabinet, or possibly an Isobarik arrangement, with mid and top drivers in an OB baffle on top. I’ve also heard some tapped horns which I liked. Agree looks can be a problem, though I do like Colin’s creation with a nice veneer. The modular design is a good idea too, makes it easy to swap drivers. They look much nice in the flesh than they do in the photo- flic.kr/p/MEizHs
