Alan, my amps are exactly the same topology as all of Tom's other composite chip amps, it just uses the now discontinued stereo version of the chip in the output. So in my case a pair of lm4780ta per channel

The 86 and 86p were the initial designs when ti discontinued the chip he started building parallel designs with multiple 386s instead and dropped the 86p. I actually got him to do one last run of pcbs advice had a stash of lm4780ta chips (I still do...)
So the 286 board replaced the 86p.

It just seems to make sense, they're a great design, ive built half a dozen for myself and acquaintances, seems sensible to keep some spares. I've got all sorts metal can bb opa627s, lme49710, loads of defunct super low noise ad opamps
