I recently acquired a BB3 from Lurch of this parish and I just wanted to ask BB3 owners opinions as to which of the two carts will be a better fit for the BB3. I use the Audiomods Series 5 tonearm which has an effective mass of between 9-11 grams.
I currently run a AT ART7 cart with the BB3. The ART7 has an exceptionally low output at 0.12mv and the ‘tube hiss’ from the BB3 is pretty loud and can be heard over the music on the very quiet parts of the records. Which is pretty annoying. That aside I love the sound of the BB3 and want to keep it. I was hoping that an MC cart with a higher output would help cut down on that hiss.
Benz Micro Wood SL
Output Voltage (3.54 Cm/sec): 0.4 mV
• Internal Ohms: 12Ω
• Loading Range: >100 ohms
• Weight: 9 grams
• Compliance: 15cu
• Tracking: 1.6–1.9 grams
Benz Micro Wood SM
• Output Voltage – (3.54 Cm/sec) 0.8 mV
• Internal Ohms: 24Ω (Medium)
• Loading Range: >200 ohms (Medium),
• Weight: 9 grams
• Compliance: 14cu
• Tracking: 1.6–1.9 grams
I’m also considering the Hanah ML. All opinions/advice appreciated.
The rest of my kit is as follows in case that has a bearing on responses:
Acoustic Solid, Solid Wood TT, Line Magnetic 518ia, Spendor D7.2
Cheers A

Enjoy the BB3, Oliver.

Andy, either the Wood SL or Hana ML will do the job brilliantly. To my mind with the naturally highish gain of the BB3, the high output of the SM would severely reduce the range of usable settings on the LMs volume control.

Hi Andy, I have the Wood SL, which I use with my Avalon phone stage. It’s a beautiful cartridge which works wonderfully. I have previously owned BB3, but, unfortunately, I bought the Wood after I had it.

My Art7 doesn't and it's an absolute fooker to set up on my arm because of that.

I'm assuming you've heard the wood bodied Benz cartridges, if not I think you ought to try and get a dem, from what I've read they are a bit marmite. That's not to say they are not a good cartridge. Hana's seem to be universally liked.

The Hanah is also cheaper so may opt for that.

I was with phonomac , as I was picking up an SP10 and PMAT-1010 MK8SE (bloody brilliant combination) and he kindly set it all up. I think i am right in saying it was threaded, but can't be 100% I was very lucky as I picked mine up second hand with just a few hours on it (<20) so was like new, I paid £500 for it, bargains are out there. I wouldn't describe it as a marmite cartridge, it is very detailed and 'musical'! A great cartridge to get you dancing. My ears definitely prefer it to the Hana. Would be great if you could get a demo of them both though

From personal experience the Wood SL is a wonderful pairing with the BB3.
