Any horse racing fans on here? I go into led into by some older drinking friends 44 years ago, but it still remains an hobby today. Of course I would like to think I know and understand a little more now, and did at one time own a small share in a racehorse, he never won unfortunately, his heart was not into racing and had to be retired.

Wish I could say I was. When I was a teen, I was interested, but I quickly started betting on other sports that I thought I had a better chance of making winning bets on. By age 18 (yes I know that should’ve been the age I started) I’d learned that I was even worse at predicting winners at those too. My horse racing interest was over before it really should’ve started.

You always lose more when you start out, experience and knowledge are the thing when it comes to betting.

I used to bet on the horses a lot, never won much. Last time was at Utoxeter about 10 years ago. One of my brothers is still into it, he sometimes flies out to Dubai just for the racing.

My last bet on horses was Corbiere in the grand National! I won quite a few quid and had my wallet nicked shortly after cashing in. I do bet on UFC occasionally, but I had a bad run on that too. 4 straight decision wins that went the other way, despite everyone watching thinking they went the way I bet on. That put me off again.

Well we've been looking forward to the York Ebor meeting and finally it's here starting yesterday. Great start to the meeting, two 12/1 winners and a couple of seconds. Really fancied the first one El Astonaute so a very profitable first day. Nothing really fancied today so it will be fun small bets.

A mate gave me a tip on a horse and I backed it in the next four races, a pony on the nose each time, all four races it did nothing. That was the end of backing the gee gees for me, gave it up after that. Fifth time it went out in came in first at 12-1.
My favourite ever convo overheard in the bookies: This bloke is asking about a horse's chances and someone tells him not to back it as it is a long course and it is not good running over distances. The bloke replies 'How can it be no good at running distances? It's a horse.'

Apart from the office sweepstake on the National, I've not backed a horse since I was a nipper. Back then, the whole extended family would pick a horse and if anyone won, they shared the winnings. I think second was the closest any of my horses came to winning. I was puzzled by the term 'each way bet' because all the horses seemed to run in the same direction.

Yesterday was not a day to put too much on for me. Lost on the first race, level on the next two but in the big race of the day, The Yorkshire Oaks, was my most fancied horse Sea of Class, and she duly won at 7/4 fav. In last two races, I had one horse placed, so a winning day over all.

Day three was not a good one, didn't back one winner. Worst of all the favourite in the big sprint (Nunthorpe Stakes) Battaash was odds-on, 4/6, and I thought was a good thing. I was not intending to back him, but his price went to 10/11 and I couldn't resist, placed a sizable bet only to see him get beaten. This has wiped out my profit for the week, but that's horse racing. Try again today.

Today there was not only good racing at York but also at Goodwood and Newmarket. My first two bets both won, although at shorter prices (2/1 and 11/8) and both were included in a three timer and four horse acca. The three timer went down in the final race, but the next horse won in the acca leaving me sweating until 5.20pm for the last leg. Unfortunately my horse finished last even though it was fancied (not the fav though) and the payout would have been substantial. I did back another couple of winners and of course a couple of losers but finished up on the day and the week. The next four day meeting is the St Ledger at Doncaster next month, may even go for one of the days.
