Just for fun, if you could choose a single speaker to listen to mono recordings what would it be? I have electrostatic (Quad ESL 57) and horn (Tannoy Monitor GOLD 15"). Remember its for fun.

I have no idea.
Certainly, Quad 57 come from the end of the mono recording era and was sold singly and used in that way.
What makes a speaker suitable or preferred for mono usage?

I'm genuinely curious if there are some characteristics that makes a particularly good mono speaker!

I'm genuinely curious if there are some characteristics that makes a particularly good mono speaker! I honestly don't know, perhaps Gilbert Briggs might have something to say on the subject! There must be some characteristics as there seems to be many just designed for this type of listening.

My apologies for turning more serious, but I think it's interesting. Here's an out-take from a Steve Guttenberg article on the mono revival.... "When I ran into Stereophile magazine writer Art Dudley at a mono listening party at the In Living Stereo NYC store, he said, "It really comes down to body and impact. I appreciate stereo imaging -- it can be highly entertaining with the right sort of music -- but the 'phasey' quality of stereo can be a distraction." It's not just old mono LPs; he felt the same way about mono CDs. The more concentrated sound focuses the listener's attention. Curiously, all of the mono-holics hook up two speakers to their mono systems, which confounds me. If you really believe in mono, wouldn't it make more sense to use just a single speaker?" www.cnet.com/tech/home-entertainment/with-mono-sound-all-you-need-is-one-speaker/

Yep, I've been using my Tannoy 15"MG's this evening and had an hour just listening to a single one, it sounded excellent.

A Quad ESL 57 was designed to be used as a mono speaker and the use of the legs on it were to tilt the speaker to point by at the ceiling and this would spread the sound and stop the beaming of the treble . They would be my first choice as a speaker to listen to mono recordings .

I've not space in my room for the ESL57, a bit daft really, I bought a pair years on impulse and not listened to them very much. Quite silly really!!! I could use the '57 but it needs space to sing properly.

was going to say ESL too but that's too predictable so I'll say Decca Corner Horn instead I don't mind mono through two speakers personally but I've got very few mono recordings.

There are myryad recordings of classical music in mono. Many of them legendary. I never bother with any of them. I'm not a fan of mono at all.

I would suggest a classic speaker such as a Tannoy, Quad or KEF. It just seems to go with the heritage of mono recordings.
Was at Tom's at one point where he played a live Bill Evans mono recording using a mono cartridge and a mono stage but played via two speakers. The sense of space, depth, height and detail was breathtaking. Uncanny.

Looks like I need to have a comparison of my own Quad ESL 57 speakers and my Tannoy 15" MG and see which wins out!
