as a test i could just bypass the switch and see how the 1 channel sounds before spending, makes sense yes?

You can bypass the switch to see how it sounds and I'd be stunned if you didn't notice an instant improvement. I only use Elma selector switches these days and for the stepped Attenuator too. Huge range of stuff out there from seiden etc, but the Elma stuff is reall good quality.

Yes. Angus built one and it changed the game. It's built on the Elma switch and the uses the Goldpoint Wafers. He picked the Resistors personally after investigating the metal used for the metal film. Built with matching resistors per channel to four decimal places....He's a mad man but I tell you what, the image stability and channel separation is the best you'll find on any SA. You know what he's like Jamie, everything to the Nth degree! bigbird has one in his BT2. I'm sure he'll drop his 2p worth on it. The Stoyan one was a bargain but it's not in this class. Also, felt it had a bit of boom around the bottom end. Disappeared when I took it out. VERY musical though

So what's now classed as "the best" step attenuator? I think I have Kosmo in my Croft at the moment.

So what's now classed as "the best" step attenuator? I think I have Kosmo in my Croft at the moment. Angus's AWM-SA for me or you could always buy a Zfoil one at £3k.....it won't be as closely channel matched though 😉 Seriously, I've had multiple Khozmos.....they don't do anything wrong IMO. I haven't A/B tested them, but I did do an A/B with that one of Stoyans which I kept over a Khozmo 64 relay attenuator, then I A/B tested the AWM-SA and the Stoyan one, and it wasn't a good outcome for the Stoyan one. Personally, I think the AWM-SA is as good as it gets, due to the fact he went to the trouble of research almost every facet of the Resistors he picked. I didn't ask what they were but i do know they are Metal Foil. He then channel matched them to 4 decimal places. The thing is built with a proper engineering approach, like everything he does is. No foo. As for sonic signatures of resistors etc....at no point have I been aware of a signature with it. I have been through a lot of Stepped Attenuators and this one is going nowhere.

Jamie I've got that Elma switch in my bits box 2x6 way. Used in a previous build, yours for twenty quid if you fancy it.
