It's always hit and miss at these dog's swapping carts and stages. The trouble with barringtons stage was the gain was overloading the pre with the HO MC that was being used, then the ortofon was riding too low with arm back about 5mm too low, in my estimation and the arm was at its height limit.
The cart set up for the arm was David's digital/optical job with it's own phono/dac unit. Nicks phono wasnt used, at least not by the time i left around 4pm.
Overall less successful and varied than the last meeting, at least for me.
Star of the show was Ali's tiny 10 watt class A amps, fu k me they do well for 300 notes. Smooth, refined and detailed, all the good class a traits in spades.
Brooksys speakers are an acquired taste, they over drive the room in the bass at high volumes but can be remarkeably insightful otherwise.
Always worth the trip I think.

Last time I went up, he had Yammys on the end of the system. They were superb. Yes, it has quite high gain, the Bigbottle so it wouldn't have liked that at all. I'm not overly concerned about the performance. In a more natural environment it's very enjoyable so hopefully, when I've built the first official version (Barry's is a prototype) I'll get it out and about and get feedback from the owners systems. Maybe we can put a day together for a paradise bakeoff. Just for fun obviously lol |

Look forward to hearing it if it gets fixed mate. I’ve some little class A monoblocks I’m taking, also an AVC using Tribute transformers. Looks like these could be of interest to lots of us here, Any more info would be fab. |

Oli, yeh we can get together. I'm flat out with CAD work for the next month but might be able to squeeze something in before that's done. Be nice to hear your krell, been a while since I sold mine.

There are sooooo many variables in a bake off such as this. It's a learning process...don't let that put you off.

I can't find any measurements for the speakers anywhere but I bet the FR is all over the shop (literally in this case) so they hardly seem suitable for the purpose of baking off other kit. At Cranage he had some big conventional three-ways that sounded excellent, why can't he stick those in for the bake offs? And use a digital source when comparing amplifiers? |

Quite a leap,of faith getting them but it sounds like you’ve bee royally rewarded. Yeah bit of a punt, but cheap price so not a lot to risk. I liked the idea of monoblocks with separate power supplies for each channel. The small size was a requirement too, so a win win with these. |

The reports all indicate that the set up was not ideal and the fact they had to bend over backwards to get it to work suggests it was neither ideal or ever going to be successful. I will take the feedback and see if there is anything i can do to prevent the reported ground issue they had too. Usually it's just a loop but i dont have any issues here nor do the other 2 owners. Thats what makes it difficult to sort out. I like what i hear and so do the few who have one, which is where my attention is focused. Maybe i can get out and about with it at some point but i am in no rush. |

So wot do they do exactly, apart from Wizz. ? Whizzer cones? They extend the high frequency of a single driver by 'whizzing' and creating high frequency. Saves using a tweeter but HF response is curtailed and ragged - i.e lots of dips and troughs. Although in practice a decent implementation can sound reasonable but it isn't something I would use to 'test' other equipment's abilities. Anyway they are not whizzers in this case so its a dead issue. |
