Ha ha, that's class. Pity they aren't a bit stronger to resist the flexing. Hahaha, I am of course just poking fun. Yes, theybare way too flexible for anything serious...but I am starting to really enjoy my biscuit tin builds....sooooo tasty lol

A little system update, not that much has changed. I am very happy with the overall performance. Recently fitted a quality pair of PCC88's and a Telefunken ECC83 to the BB3, plus replacing the multi-fet boards with the latest fets, so that is top notch. Have been thinking of the life span of my re-tipped Lyra Clavis cartridge so have purchased another cartridge to share the load. I have gone a bit left field buying a little used Dynavector that was part of a guys fathers collection. Not quite NOS but not far off. It is a Dynavector Karat Ruby, initially sold from 1980, designed with a very short synthetic ruby cantilever and a fine line stylus. I had to make a 4mm spacer to fit above the cartridge because the rear of the arm couldn't be lowered enough. The performance has exceeded expectations, it is very open and a fantastically layered soundstage, so I am really pleased.

OMGA new piece of kit in the system this afternoon. This has raised the transparency level by a big margin, this driving the Neurochrome power amp is a force to be reckoned with. The performance is utterly stunning. What is it you ask? On/off switch to the left, 3 input selector in the middle and volume on the right, using an Acoustic Dimension stepped attenuator. It is the new BT2 preamp from Bigbottle Audio, or to be more precise my version of the build. A little while ago I acquired one of the circuit boards designed by Angus with a view to being a bit of a guinea pig to assess the performance. I bought a reasonably compact case and some very low noise regulators and have finally completed the build. The remote control board was a donor from another unit and needed a bit of modification to drive the attenuator acceptably. The performance is absolutely top notch, this is an end game preamp. The sound of the vinyl system is sublime.

Glad you finally got it all together and in the system.
All credit for the performance must go to Angus. I have been using mine for months now with one of his Custom Stepped Attenuators and it's crushed EVERYTHING i have tried next to it or before it.
Luckily he donated the Preamp PCB to the Bigbottle Audio stable. Angus is also using it in his version, the Avalon BT2.
I'm not sure if i plan to offer the preamp as a Purchasable item at the moment. I need to give consideration to how much time i want to spend building stuff in my cold garage lol

What's the deal with it then? Does it use valves? Is it passive, active, zero gain?

What's the deal with it then? Does it use valves? Is it passive, active, zero gain? It's a Unity gain buffer board. Opamp based. Buffers on the way in and on the way out. It can be set up to a factor of 4 gain though, if required. The stepped attenuator in mine and Angus's is built by Angus. It's channel balance is outrageous as he hand matches every pair. It really is very good.

Eight, must have missed all this before. About as optimal as a pre-amp can get then.

Short signal path, minimal components, unity gain, Low distortion and high SNR He went further and took this design to the furthest point he could.

Thanks Antonio. The two selector knobs came off some old speakers, so old in fact that I can't remember when.
I am very pleased with how it looks, it usually takes a while to find a suitable case that looks good and is relatively inexpensive. The only downside to this particular case was the IEC mains connector hole wasn't pre-cut. Takes a while to do it manually.

Its one of those jobs that can be a real pain, originally had a square hole punch the same size and an IEC but only good for steel casework (how long ago ) then an upmarket dremel and some real nice 12mm double cut burrs rip it out in around 5 minutes, lots of swarf though!
Now I use a laser cutter up to 8mm it makes life so much neater now but appreciate the hassle it is. Nice work by the way
